SMC NEWS 2024 - Term 3, Week 5
Week Ahead
From the College Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
Looking forward to an excellent Week 5 and 6 - hopefully with slightly warmer conditions around the College. The past few weeks have been very cold and I appreciate our young men's adherence to the Uniform Code during this time.
I head to the TCS Principal's Forum in Chinchilla this week and to Melbourne for the annual EduTech conference for 2 days next week. Ms Samantha Parle, our DP, will be the Acting Principal in my absence.
Firstly
Thank you to all year 6 Campers and Staff for an excellent week around Canberra last week. Being away for such a period of time with boys of this age is undoubtedly an amazing opportunity, but our gratitude goes out to staff and our boys who arrived home late on Friday night. I appreciate your patience as parents and carers in dropping the boys off last Monday on a very cold morning! We will again review the camp and the experience for the students and staff for 2025 Year 6 students.
Our Safety Culture
The College conducted a "known" lockdown last Thursday during break time. These scheduled safety practices are important for our learning as a College on how to move as a community to safety. We will continue to conduct scheduled Lockdown and Fire Alarm practices each term for the safety of our students and staff.
Our Learning Culture
The College has spent significant time and resources over the past few years on developing our teaching staff. This includes a co-ordinated approach to pedagogy (teaching skills), as well as observations and feedback to our staff. This continues in the coming weeks with a visit from a team of trained observers from the 4D approach to classroom observation. It will be the fourth time over the past 2 years this team has "profiled" our staff.
Debating
Our Year 12 SMC team's defeat to Fairholme last week marked the end of the 2024 Debating season for the College. Congratulations to Tamara Cooper for her wonderful effort in co-ordinating the 2024 Debating season. Debating is a critical part of our "Men for Tomorrow" vision at the College. We had a number of successful teams this year, and I appreciate the assistance from our very supportive parents and teaching staff. Thank you also to our Year 12 boys who not only had another successful season themselves but took coaching roles with the younger teams this year.
Looking Back
- A very sincere thank you to Mr Marty Hollis for his efforts over the past 4 weeks in Ms Samantha Parle's absence on leave. I think it would be fair to say that it was a very busy month, but Marty was able to handle all of these responsibilities very well.
- Accompanying me last Saturday at an RSL Vigil for SMC returned soldiers were Connor Leeson, TJ Maker, Jeramy Skeels, Ben Moore and Lucas Menzies. It is always good to catch up with the proud Old Boys of SMC!
Looking Ahead
- Good Luck to our Year 12 students for their "100 Day" celebrations this week, including Dinner on Tuesday night.
Reflection
Our Faith and Identity
I’ve been asked by a few staff over the past fortnight where the Hail Mary “comes from”. I must admit, I didn’t know myself, so I can offer the following from our friends at Wikipedia:
The Hail Mary (Latin: Ave Maria) or Angelical salutation is a traditional Catholic prayer addressing Mary, the mother of Jesus. The prayer is based on two biblical passages featured in the Gospel of Luke: the Angel Gabriel's visit to Mary (the Annunciation) and Mary's subsequent visit to Elisabeth, the mother of John the Baptist (the Visitation). It is also called the Angelical Salutation, as the prayer is based on the Archangel Gabriel's words to Mary. The Hail Mary is a prayer of praise for and of petition to Mary, regarded as the Theotokos (Mother of God). Since the 16th century, the version of the prayer used in the Catholic Church closes with an appeal for her intercession. The prayer takes different forms in various traditions and has often been set to music.
Have a wonderful fortnight and thank you for your continued support.

Self-Care
After a wonderful long service leave break, I have the great privilege of beginning Week 5 of the term feeling quite refreshed and full of energy. But this is not the case for most, and certainly not for the boys. The excitement of returning to school after the break has faded, and the reality of looming assessment is having an impact. As our boys develop into young men, they grow in their capacity to know themselves and manage themselves, especially when under stress. As parents, we can model and demonstrate the essential skills of self-awareness and self-care. I hope that your sons are learning to know themselves and can manage the stresses of life with your support.
Adults on Campus
One of the tricky aspects of managing the widespread campus of SMC is maintaining student safety. One of the elements that is key to student safety while at school is that we restrict and supervise the presence of non-staff adults on site. All of our staff undergo significant background checks and child protection training. Any guest speaker or volunteer who works with students at the College must also meet these standards or be in the presence of a teacher while with students. For parents, these guidelines mean that you should not be on the College grounds without first signing in at the Office. Parents are welcome on campus to attend College events – such as the Academic Awards this week – and we manage these risks in other ways. So, while it may seem pedantic, please assist us in maintaining student safety by staying off the College grounds unless attending a specific College event. If you have any questions reading this, please let me know.
Service
There are a great number of ways for our boys to be agents of service in our SMC community and in the larger communities that they live in. In the next few weeks, I will be asking for boys to register their interest in a ‘hands-on’ service group that will be up and running this term. So many of our parents – that’s you! – give their time and energy to a range of community organizations and I know that your boys learn from your example. The best way to show your gratitude is to give back – and that looks a little different for each person.

Feast of the Assumption
This Thursday, 15th August, we will gather for one of our “Big 4” whole school masses.
This time, we are celebrating the Feast of the Assumption. This significant day in the church’s calendar honours Mary, the Mother of Jesus, who is also the patron of our College.
The Christian Brothers, who established the college in 1899, had a profound devotion to Mary and her unique role in the history of the church. But who is Mary, and why is she so significant to Catholic Christianity?
Mary holds a special place because she is the mother of Jesus. We believe that Mary played a crucial role in God’s plan by giving birth to Jesus. She symbolizes love, devotion, and faith. Despite having the choice to decline, she accepted God’s call.
Catholics often pray to Mary for guidance, protection, and intercession. They believe she can intercede with God on their behalf, helping to bring their prayers to Him. Sons generally listen to their mothers! Additionally, Catholics believe that God chose Mary to be a model of holiness and an inspiration for living for all of us.
The Feast of the Assumption reflects the Catholic belief that Mary, as the Mother of Jesus, was bodily assumed into heaven.
Our Assumption mass is not only a celebration of Mary but also a celebration of all of the women in our lives. Women play vital roles in all our lives, and our Assumption Mass is an opportunity to express our gratitude for this.
Please ensure your son is in full academic uniform for this important event.

Assessment Submission Process
As we approach the heavy assessment period, I’d like to remind students and families of our Assessment Submission Process. Here are a few reminders to ensure everyone is well-prepared and organised:
Assessment Submission Process
1. Distribution of Assessment Tasks:
- Assessment task sheets are distributed through Canvas.
- Due dates are published on the Sentral Calendar each term, please ensure you are checking these regularly.
2. Draft Submission:
- Students must submit their draft responses by the due date through Canvas.
- Failure to submit a completed draft assessment will result in the implementation of the Academic Integrity Process.
- Feedback on drafts will be provided with a minimum of one week between draft feedback and final submission.
3. Final Submission:
- Students must submit their final assessments on or before the due date.
4. Post-Submission:
- If the submission is received, the teacher will make a judgment of student achievement based on the evidence provided.
Key Points to Remember
- Stay Organized: Keep track of all due dates and ensure you are aware of the deadlines for both draft and final submissions.
- Utilize Feedback: Make the most of the feedback provided on your drafts to improve your final submissions.
- Adhere to Deadlines: Submitting your assessments on time is crucial to avoid penalties and ensure your work is evaluated fairly.
By following these steps and staying diligent, students can navigate the assessment period successfully.
Good luck to all in the coming weeks!

Year 6 Sydney/Canberra Trip
The Year 6 trip to Sydney and Canberra was an incredible opportunity for our students to explore significant cultural, historical, sporting, scientific and religious landmarks, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Our adventure began in Sydney, where we visited Mary MacKillop Place. Our visit to the museum and chapel provided the students with the opportunity to learn about the life and legacy of Australia’s first saint, Mary MacKillop.
In Canberra, we visited Parliament House, where students had the chance to witness the workings of Australian democracy firsthand. The interactive exhibits and hands-on activities at Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre, captivated everyone, making science fun and accessible. The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) captured the students’ interest as they learnt about the training and dedication required to become elite athletes. The tour included a visit to the training facilities and a chance to meet some of the athletes.
The visit to the Australian War Memorial was a poignant and educational experience. The students were moved by the stories of bravery and sacrifice, and the exhibits provided a deep understanding of Australia’s military history. The memorial’s serene atmosphere allowed for reflection and respect.
Many of the students and staff were very excited to have their first experience of snow at Mt Selwyn. They were not disappointed with a beautiful day and great snow. The students had an absolute blast sliding down the snowy slopes on their toboggans.
This camp was not only educational but also a fantastic bonding experience for our students. A big thank you to Mrs Williams, Mr Roy, Miss Stewart, Mrs Connolly, Mr Morrissy, Mr Gregson and Miss Ross for accompanying the students and ensuring that they remained safe and enjoyed themselves.
Catholic Week Carnival
Congratulations to all students who participated in touch football and netball at the Primary Catholic Week carnival. A special congratulations to the Year 5 White and Year 6 White touch football teams who won their competition. Great effort boys!
Monday Soccer Lessons
Term 3 soccer lessons will continue until Week 9. As a part of the College’s affiliation with the Thunder, we are thankful to Mirko Crociati for his expertise and support of these sessions. Students are reminded to wear their academic uniform to school and bring their sports uniform to change into for the lesson. There is no need for shin pads or boots. Students who do not bring their sports uniforms will not be able to participate.
Friday Sport
Interschool sport will continue this Friday until Weeks 7. This term, we will be competing in soccer and rugby league, and students can also play chess at school. The students need to ensure that they have the necessary equipment for their chosen activity.
Book Week – Week 7
Book Week is in Week 7 this term, and the theme is Reading is Magic. There are many exciting events planned for the week, including a narrative writing workshop with author Dr James Phelan on Tuesday for Years 5 and 6 and at 5pm a Boys, Books and BBQ for all ages event with James. On Wednesday, there will be lunch events, including a scavenger hunt and bingo with various prizes. On Thursday, we have the costume parade in period 1, and there will be prizes for the best costume and trivia questions. There will also be a whole school Book Week costume competition where the primary students are welcome to enter with prizes for the top five in the school. Mini competitions also run over the next two weeks, and entries will be displayed in the library during Book Week and for the remainder of the term.
Communication
A reminder to that updates regarding events or issues relevant to the Primary will be communicated in the College newsletter and / or sent via the College app. Parents that have any queries are encouraged to email their son’s teacher after checking the newsletter and the app.
